Sketch Number 5 28/06/14

I want to develop my script more so then any other type because I really like the way it looks and would love to be able to do it myself. Here I have tried to use two opposite typefaces to show the difference, I think I have already developed my skill further because of the time I'm taking on it.

However, I still need to look into pens and techniques and hopefully it should help me.

Monogram logo

I came across this book which I just had to buy, I definitely judged it by its cover because I love it. I looked on the website and the pages inside and really liked its layout, the colours and simplicity of it. I also like the content, these are really interesting and well thought out logos. They give me a lot of ideas and inspiration [linking letters to other letters] which is good for this sketch a day challenge.

Sketch Number 4, 27/06/14

This time around I took my time, sketched it out, and tried to make it look good. I think there is a massive difference between the ones I haven't spent time over and these two.
It definitely taught me to sketch the idea out, and take my time. However there are mistakes and areas I don't like, such as wobbly lines etc. I think the key is to be fast and fluid with my movements, so the pen doesn't wobble on the page.

Bijdevleet

I'm a really big fan of this design company Bijdevleet, from Rotterdam but particularly the work of Tim Botan. I think his work is so good and works really well, he always seems to know how to do the right amount of swirls and movement. I have emailed him from their website but still waiting/hoping for a reply.

Sketch Number 3 27/06/14

I've been drunk quite a lot this week so thought I would try writing it. I can see how I'm thinking more about the shape and look of the piece, but still not taking enough time. I think if I spend time on it, draw it out with pencil first it will look a lot better.

Sketch Number 2, 26/06/14

I think I had work this day and was on the till for quite a while, I always call that being a 'Till Bitch'. I can understand what I was trying to do here, but definitely need to work on my script technique, weight needs to be added on the some of the lines. I need to take more time over it and stop expecting myself to be able to create something amazing straight away.

Stranger and Stranger

Stranger and Stranger are this amazing company in New York and London that create beautiful designs for any type of alcohol. They design everything from the typeface, artwork to the packaging. They're a real favourite of mine because they combine two of my most favourite things, alcohol and design.
Because of this I got in touch, but still waiting/hoping for a reply.

Sketch Number 1 25/06/14

I've done a few sketches on the first day, this is to get used to it and see what I can do.
Looks like not a lot really. I don't think I'm good at all yet, but this is the whole point of this sketch a day. I want to progress and develop my skill.

Summer Brief - Brief and Rationale

The brief is to research a topic to understand it.

At first I wasn't sure on what to do because I want to make sure it's useful knowing a lot about a subject.
I thought of the things outside graphics that I like and collect like, murder and crime, mugs, drinking - but by that I mean the labelling and packaging etc.

However, I've chosen to look into hand rendered type. My brother got a bottle of Kraken for his birthday and I love the design of it, so I looked it up and a company Stranger and Stranger designed it along with many more bottles. So looking through them it made me interested in the type they use.
From there I used Instagram as a platform to find good type work and the designers to go with them. Being interested in hand rendered type isn't enough, I want to practise it too along with researching into it.

Rationale

For the summer brief I want to research into hand rendered type which will include
- What type of pens to use
- What paper is good to use
-Techniques, caligraphy techniques etc
-Emails to designers to ask them questions about these things and hopefully start up a correspondence

I don't see the point in researching all of this if i'm not going to get properly involved so I have decided to do a 'Sketch a day' challenge. Which means I will practise type everyday and hopefully blog everyday to get me back into a routine and used to blogging.
